This is the way the game is headed anyhow, which Mike D’Antoni realized more than 15 years ago, as coach of the Phoenix Suns, when he implemented an offensive scheme called Seven Seconds Or Less – as in, that’s how long it should take his team to shoot the ball. In 2004-05, after stinking up gyms for years, D’Antoni’s turbocharged team led the league in offensive rating, in three-pointers taken, in three-pointers made, and, most importantly, in wins. The vintage Premier design is really about focusing on what is necessary and eliminating what is unnecessary. The case shape is fairly straightforward: round with beautifully curved lugs with sculpted bevels and square pushers. Though many find it blasphemous to wear a dive watch on leather, I think it lends an iconoclastic ruggedness, releasing the diver from its strictly aquatic realm, making it more versatile than the predictable rubber or metal bands. Besides, a good shell cordovan strap can handle a little water. And hey, if Redford does it, who are we to argue?

Today, we’re going hands-on with what just might be my personal favorite new TAG Heuer Carrera of the last two decades or so. It’s been introduced to mark TAG Heuer’s 160th anniversary, which I think says something about what the simple, round, minimalist Carrera means to TAG Heuer. But before we dig into this new watch, let’s quickly go over the watch that inspired it. If the crowns are the dog's ears and the domes its eyes, the power reserve is its jaw. Winding the mainspring causes the jaw to gradually open and as the mainspring winds down, the jaws close. The power reserve is located on the underside of the case, but thanks to the arrangement of the lugs and strap as well as its three-dimensionality, it can easily be seen when the watch is being worn – a private pleasure for the owner, as it's not visible topside. The impressively thin 4.8mm caliber, decorated with Glashütte striping, blued screws, and a rotor with a small globe engraving, keeps the 40mm steel case at an impressive case height of 9.9mm.
