The Benu Tourbillon was originally released in 2010 and in a number of respects is a rather unusual example of the modern art of the tourbillon. It has a number of unusual or unique features. I'm a big fan of display backs on watches at every price point, and I got a huge kick out of seeing the rotor spinning on my first Seiko 5 (back when Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth), but I can't help but think of both Rolex and Tudor as solid-back companies (and yes, I know the North Flag has a clear caseback). And yet, and yet. In 2011, Jay-Z and Kanye West told us that "Bueller had a Mueller / but I switched it for a Mille cause I'm richer," in "Gotta Have It"; and Pharrell (who is not stranger to fine luxury timepieces) raps with French Montana in their song "Bring Dem Things," "Y'all be Bapein' / I be human-made and / y'all be APin' / I'm Richard Mille nation / No Diamonds, just tourbillon facing / with gears and Breguet did not show his tourbillon to the general public until 1806, when a tourbillon was exhibited at the National Exhibition of Industrial Products, at the Esplanade Les Invalides in Paris. The tourbillon system is the brainchild of watchmaker Eric Coudray. Coudray's name to this day is not especially well-known despite the fact that his work is. Off the top of my head, I think you might find some roughly similar values in terms of offerings from Seiko in the Presage and Prospex lines, but the Independence 20 comes with not only a very well executed set of externals, but also a very interesting movement with a fascinating story behind it that illustrates both the ambitiousness of the brand and the seriousness of its founders.

Featuring the same stepped design to their original launch last summer, this quartz-powered timepiece now features a date, a moonphase and a handsome brown leather strap. Fret not, it's still priced at a reasonable $198 and is available for pre-order via Noah. The estimated ship date is early June 2025. Well, I’m going to state the obvious here. The market for vintage Rolex Daytonas is still crazy! First we had the Daytona Ultimatum sale at Phillips, which brought in a whopping $22.1 million with 100% of the 32 lots selling (the highlight obviously being "the Unicorn," which sold for $5.9 million. Though it got much less attention, there was a tropical Paul Newman Daytona ref. But how does yellow gold fit into this vintage dive watch equation? It doesn't really. It's a little bit off-piste for a brand like Tudor. But if they are producing Black Bay S&G watches and that peculiar BB58 with green dial in gold (sorry that watch is just not for me) then why not ask for a yellow (please not bronze) 54?
